A Mexican man who has opened his heart to stray animals in need has authored a true sorrow-to-success story with one special stray dog. Even after being bitten hard, he persevered in trying to bond with the terrified pup.

His selfless efforts eventually paid off, and his success is a message to all to always look out for those in greatest need.

Animal lover Jorge Rafael Jaime Martinez, 46, lives in the city of Nuevo Laredo in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. He met Ojo the rescue dog on a blazing hot day and approached her with caution.

Martinez told The Epoch Times in Spanish that he found Ojo in an abandoned house.

“I think her reaction—biting me—may owe to the fact that Ojo was mistreated and beaten,” he said. “I think she was defensive because of that.”

Martinez sustained a significant bite to his upper left arm. The bite drew blood, and a huge bruise soon covered the site of the injury; he had to see a doctor.

Yet, undeterred, he went straight back to the site of the abandoned house to feed Ojo and take her to a veterinarian. He then committed to bringing her food and water every day.

With time, Ojo gradually warmed to her new companion.

Martinez shared their journey in a Twitter post. “She bit me; I paid her with love,” he wrote. “They are not bad, only sometimes on the streets they have to fight for their life.”
“She is pure love, even though she bites hard,” he added in another post, along with a heartwarming video of Ojo running to bestow kisses and receive cuddles from her guardian angel, her tail wagging.

Martinez has since found a safe place for Ojo to live. At the time of writing, he still visits her every day.

“Now, she is no longer aggressive,” Martinez told The Epoch Times. “On the contrary, she only gives love; she sees me and runs to hug me.”

Martinez loves animals and is truly one selfless animal champion. He says he tries to help whenever the opportunity arises, and “rescues everything, but mainly cats and dogs.”

He hopes that his and Ojo’s story helps raise awareness.

“If you like animals, any type of pet that you take care of, never abandon them,” he said.
