A shocking video has captured an eight-year-old boy who was bitten by a small shark during a spearfishing trip with his dad. Luckily, the shark’s opportunistic lurch did not cause any injuries.
Manni Alam of Australia was out with his father, Radwan Alam, spearfishing near the central Queensland coast when he caught a fish. In footage uploaded to Instagram, Radwan can be heard asking his son, “Manni, show me what you got!” The boy, still in the water wearing his wetsuit, lays his catch on the deck.
In the same instant, a baby shark launches itself from the water into Manni’s left torso, narrowly missing Manni’s fish. Radwan shrieks and the film cuts out.
Fortunately, Manni was fine. In another video, Radwan films his smiling son’s solo injury, a tiny, tooth-shaped puncture wound on his left collarbone, with brave Manni claiming, “I had two wetsuits on, that’s why.”
When News 9 asked Manni how it felt, he said that the bite hurt him a little bit.
According to Fox News, Australian news outlets believe Manni’s attacker was likely a blacktip reef shark, a species among the most abundant in the tropical coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Unprovoked attacks, a small number of them fatal, are not uncommon.
Despite his close encounter, Manni has not been put off sea-bound adventures with his dad. More recent videos from their family’s Instagram account show the boy back in the water, reeling in huge fish, and even interacting with a “deadly octopus.”
