The Smashing Pumpkins are set to release ‘Teargarden By Kaleidyscope: Vol. 1 Songs For A Sailor’ on Tuesday, May 25, which will be the band’s eighth album to date.
The project was started in September of 2009, said a Smashing Pumpkins statement. At that time the band only consisted of one original member, Billy Corgan, and a dream. The others had quit. Corgan recently brought on bassist Nicole Fiorentino to join guitarist Jeff Schroeder and drummer Mike Byrne. The structure of the band is likely to remain this way, as Corgan is apparently the one who calls the shots.
The Smashing Pumpkins have been releasing one song from the album at a time on the band’s official website, free of charge. The first track, “Astral Planes,” seems to be not quite that signature upbeat and grungy sound that Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins are known for. However, “Teargarden By Kaleidyscope” does illustrate a positive side of the Pumpkins that hasn’t been heard from in a while.
“A Stitch In Time,” is a mid-tempo acoustic track showing another side of Corgan’s personality and writing style, similar to the type of style which was featured heavily on the band’s 1995 release ‘Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’. “Widow Wake My Mind,” is optimistic, yet a little too poppy for the Pumpkins, and features an organ line that seems to be another lost track from the ’Melon Collie' days. “A Song For A Son,” is a slow and dramatic piece with a piano intro that could fit in any sad film or alongside an Elton John tune. The song later breaks into a series of guitar lines reminiscent of Pink Floyd.
The Smashing Pumpkins’ first album “Gish,” released in 1991, didn’t bring the band the success they were hoping for. After Nirvana’s global success, the Smashing Pumpkins released their second album “Siamese Dream” in 1993, which delivered multiple hit singles. Following the success of “Siamese Dream,” Corgan was able to pull himself out of a depression that led him to spend extreme amounts of time in the studio working on the album.
The Smashing Pumpkins have had a lot of changes in their lineup since the band gained popularity back in 1996, when Pumpkins keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin died of a drug overdose. The band has, nonetheless, always revolved around Billy Corgan, the main source of the songs as the group’s singer-songwriter.
