ESCONDIDO, Calif.—Shen Yun’s return to warm San Diego was met with appreciative applause from a responsive audience on May 26. San Diego performances, to be held over the next three days, are the final appearances Shen Yun will give for the West Coast this spring.

Mr. Givens, a manager of a country club in southern California, was at the performance with his wife.

“Very, very exciting, colorful, and the musicality is top shelf. Very thrilled to be a part of this spectacle tonight,” he said.

Chinese classical dance takes center stage in Shen Yun, which has brought traditional Chinese culture to audience members of the world during the 2008–2009 season.

Mr. Givens said, “I’ve never seen anything so precise, colorful, and the choreography is amazing—absolutely amazing. Really very, very exciting to watch.”

Mr. Givens said the spirituality in the show was “very touching as well. My wife was in tears at a few different moments of the production.”

His wife added, “The orchestra just blew me away. It was just fabulous, beautiful, touching. Everything was just gorgeous about the orchestra. I could not believe it.”

Shen Yun’s orchestra combines two classical forms, and employs both Western and Chinese instruments, including the erhu, a two-stringed instrument that plays very rich and soulful tones.

“While all the other colorful things were going on, I was looking at the orchestra. I could not believe how beautiful it was. That really touched me. And the colors and everything. It was fabulous, wonderful, breathtaking,” said Mrs. Givens.

Having been a violinist, she said that she was moved to tears by the music that the orchestra played, adding, “That’s what really touched me, just beautiful—the music.

“And you know why it’s interesting to me? I have relatives that are Chinese and Mexican, half and half, and I definitely have to let them know about this fabulous production,” she said.

Next winter, when New York-based Shen Yun tours the world again, the Givens said they will bring a “busload or two” to watch the show.
