VANCOUVER, British Columbia—Shen Yun Performing Arts played an afternoon show for an appreciative audience on Saturday, the second day of a seven-show run at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
At intermission, audience members Mr. and Mrs. Ashcroft shared their thoughts on the performance. Mr. Ashcroft is a corporate manager for a major food company that owns a number of popular food brands.
“It was unique. It is a pleasure to see the other cultures, the other dances, and the cultural aspect of it has been quite pleasing,” Mr. Ashcroft said.
Mr. Ashcroft was especially inpressed by the innovative digital backdrops that provides an animated setting for the performances. The backdrops are custom-designed to coordinate with the costumes, choreography, lighting, and storyline for each dance.
“I liked the backdrops—I think that was unique. I hadn’t seen that done in any shows that I have seen in the past, and it was very enlightening. It adds a very nice dimension to the whole show,” said Mr. Ashcroft, adding that he and his wife go to shows frequently.
Shen Yun is renowned for its Chinese classical dance, which comprises ethnic and folk dance, story-based dance, and aerial movements such as dives, leaps, and spins. In its early stages it was mainly passed down among the common people, through members of the imperial court, and as part of ancient theatre.
Shen Yun will present four more shows in Vancouver before going on to Calgary, Edmonton, and Regina.
There are three Shen Yun Performing Arts companies touring the world. The other two are currently performing in Australia and Scotland.
