On Wednesday, March 4th the doors to Vancity Theatre in Vancouver opened to a special presentation of the Women in Film Festival (WIFF) where filmmakers, broadcasters, technologists, and social media shared their diverse experiences in film and media.

Women In Film & Television Vancouver (WIFTV) is an internationally affiliated non-profit society committed to advancing and celebrating women in screen-based media.

The WIFF event welcomed those with an interest in new media. The day was divided into four panels of conversation covering the theme of bridging the gap between traditional and new forms of media.

In the first panel, Getting Your Feet Wired, artists, educators, and entrepreneurs shared their wisdom on ways to experiment with the connections between different forms of media.

The second panel, Social Media How To, delved into broadcasting history and ways to utilize social media forms in telling stories by allowing audience interaction to play out. Producer and writer Erica Hargreave, co-founder of Bridging Media, recognized that each media’s worlds and goals are quite similar yet the languages they speak are different.

“Social media and technology works so much on community building.” Hargrave said. “They try to bring each other in stages of projects to where I think for the real synergy and the real beauty and the real building happens [when] the two parties need to be talking to each other for where to go and build together from where to go.”

The third panel, Emerging Trends and Technology, explained how to creatively use new technologies for storytelling. Experts shared what the future holds for the latest technologies and trends. Apple’s  i-phone was one targeted technological trend featured in the discussion.

The fourth and final panel of the WIFF, Monetizing Your Content, explained how to turn digital works into an earnable living.

Hargreave said, “It’s not getting the viewers talking with the media makers, it’s more getting the people creating both sides talking together.”

A multimedia live performance, performed by Electrabelle Visual Effects, concluded the day. The WIFF festival ended on Sunday, March 8th, International Women’s Day.
