PHILADELPHIA—Opening night of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia was a splendid affair filled with music and colorful Chinese classical dance.

The New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts presents China’s rich 5,000-year cultural heritage through a series of expressive dance and musical performances.

“There were some pieces that were so gorgeous and colorful, but at the same time were moving and deep—so it worked at so many levels,” said Ms. Ashley Rosenthal, Member Relations, with the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.

“I have to tell you it was absolutely amazing,” added Ms. Rosenthal.

Shen Yun’s visit to Philadelphia is just one stop on a global world tour, comprising three equally-large companies. Founded in 2006, Shen Yun has won critical acclaim wherever it has travelled.

Ms. Rosenthal said it was wonderful to learn more about Chinese culture (through Shen Yun).

“There’s always something going on—it’s gorgeous,” she said.

“And the dance moves and everything were too amazing,” Ms. Rosenthal added.

Mr. Jake Dawson, a regional account executive, also with the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, said Shen Yun “transcends language, it transcends … it’s just beautiful.”

“It’s one of those things that, there’s so much going on, that if you saw it again tomorrow night you’d pick up something that you missed tonight. There was just so much going on, it was incredible. From the background to the music to the dancing and the singing, it was just a work of art,” Mr. Dawson said.

The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce worked with Shen Yun’s presenters, the Greater Philadelphia Asian Culture Center, to bring more people to see Shen Yun. Ms. Rosenthal said they would continue to support Shen Yun when it returns next year.

Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company will again perform in Philadelphia at the Academy of Music on Feb. 23. For more information, please visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
