TORONTO—The Mid-Autumn Spectacular, which is currently playing a five-day run at Toronto’s John Basset Theatre, continues to delight audiences with its portrayal of China’s ancient myths and legends.
Harvey Levenstein, a retired professor who taught history at McMaster University attended Saturday evening’s show with his wife. He said he was impressed with the music and the blend of Western and Chinese instruments in the orchestra.
“The orchestration is so good that it’s definitely better than Western music. For example, the Beijing opera is a very difficult for us to understand. Here … the orchestration and everything is brilliant. It’s very beautiful and I love everything.”
Mr. Levenstein said both he and his wife especially enjoyed the piece, Watersleeves, and also the drumming acts, Victory Drums and Drummers of the Tang Court.
“My wife and I liked the water one and the drum ones of course were spectacular. The drums especially are very spectacular and the drumming is very difficult.”
The New York-based Divine Performing Arts, the performance company that presents the Spectacular, uses various art forms such as Chinese classical dance to portray the essence of China’s traditional culture.
