A photographer from Florida has captured a series of images of a shark that appears to be grinning at the camera.
John Borys, 54, photographed the famous lemon shark, called Ms. Snooty, who has become well known for her permanently extended jaw, which makes her look like she is smiling.
The incredible series of pictures were snapped earlier this year on a shark diving trip off the coast of Jupiter, Florida.
“I have always wanted to photograph sharks, so I took a trip with a local charter,” John said. “We came across Ms. Snooty who has become famous because her jaw is permanently extended.”
According to John, Ms. Snooty’s jaw may have been permanently extended due to a genetic deformity or from a close encounter with a fisherman.
“Since taking these images, I’ve realized how misunderstood, abused, and slaughtered sharks are,” John said. “Every single dive I see injured sharks or sharks that carry the scars and souvenirs of their encounters with humans.”
“None of them pretty and all of them painful,” he added.
John began taking photos underwater in 2018. Very quickly, he learned that taking photos underwater came with some unique technical challenges, which he said made it tougher than photographing subjects in the air
However, despite all the challenges, he says that he “loved it so much” and thus moved from Illinois to Florida just so that he could dive every weekend possible and hone his skills.
