A huge herd of sheep crossing the road has made for a mesmerizing viral video after a city mayor got the idea to capture this rare moment with a drone.
Mayor Logan, 64, has been the mayor of the City of Othello in Eastern Washington for the last 10 years. On Oct. 5, a farmer from the city limits had asked local authorities for permission to block the road, so he could safely move a herd of sheep to an adjacent field.
“They’re not his sheep, but they were feeding on his property,” Mayor Logan told The Epoch Times. “He said that ... it would take about 15 to 20 minutes.”
Mayor Logan agreed to his request and captured the moment with a drone to create the viral video.
As seen in the footage, four-wheelers and sheepdogs were used to corral the herd. As a smaller group of around 30 sheep broke off, the dogs turned them around, and one bold sheep made a beeline for the road.
“Once he started going, a couple followed him and then the rest of them. It was just an avalanche after that,” Mayor Logan said. “One of my favorite parts of this video was when the sheep are crossing ... and this one sheep just jumps in the air. It was getting frisky, and it was so cute. It was funny. I had never seen a sheep crossing quite like that before.”
The mayor had “no idea” that the appeal of the video would extend beyond Othello but reasons that people must love it for its novelty.
“It was just kind of mesmerizing, with the drone footage, to see how those sheep were all together, and then they spread out into the adjacent field,” he said.
He believes that the video “made people feel good.”
Mayor Logan was born in Othello and has plans to grow the community for future generations. He wants to expand housing options, establish a long-term water supply, and build the city’s commercial and retail base to create additional jobs for the community, which is around 84 percent Hispanic with a third of the overall population under the age of 18.
“We’re looking to grow, to build the kind of community that everyone wants,” the mayor said.
