KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia—The Sultanah Asma School Band from Malaysia won the title of “World Championship Marching Show Bands 2011” in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday night.

The Malaysian band scored 94.2 points to win against 15 other marching bands in the grand finale, making the home crowd proud. The competition began on Monday, with 30 bands from 8 countries vying for the championship.

Suphanburi Marching Band from Thailand won the first runner-up award with 91.7 points and Chien-Kuo High School Marching Band from Taiwan took the second runner-up award with 90.6 points.

The Malaysian band put on an excellent show to also win the “Best Visual” and “Best Music” award in the competition, in addition to the title of champion. The band presented the theme song of “Mulan,” with music from the Disney movie’s soundtrack.

The crowd responded to the performance by the Sultanah Asma School band with the loudest cheering and applause that night, making the band’s victory a convincing one.

The Thai band presented a powerful style of drumming and music that the audience found invigorating, while the Taiwanese band appealed to the audience by playing tunes from the movie “The Sound of Music.”

The President and CEO of World Association of Marching Show Bands International, Robert Eklund, presented the trophy to the winner.

Calgary, Canada will be the host for next year’s championship.
