PASADENA, Calif.—Mrs. Orlova, a conductor of a Russian folk orchestra, and her daughter saw the Divine Performing Arts show at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on Sunday.
She told us, “It’s wonderful. I loved every single moment, every second of it. It’s very colorful and, particularly, what is interesting to me is the music combination of instruments, of folk instruments. I saw and heard pipa and erhu, and Western instruments. It’s beautiful. It’s amazing.”
She also commented on the spiritual nature of the show. “For me it’s an interesting combination of modern and very ancient, traditional, spiritual things. I think spirit is in every moment of it because art is to bring spirit into people’s souls, to bring it out, to put it on the surface, and to make your everyday life spiritual and beautiful.”
Her daughter, Ms. Mamalyga, is a software engineer and used to be a musician. “I just loved it. ... Since I played the flute, and in this concert it was very prominent, I really enjoyed listening to the sounds. … It really touched my soul.”
Mrs. Orlova went on to say, “You can feel a very, very tender part of the culture. You can see the wind, a little flower; it’s so colorful, it’s so spiritual.
“There was a very famous Russian writer. In the books he wrote that ‘Beauty is going to save the world.’ When you see this show, and the beautiful things [in it], you know that’s so powerful, you know that it’s going to save the world.”
