A couple who have been married for 70 years revealed the secret to their long marriage: “having a laugh” together.
Davie and Margaret Hunter met when they both worked for Schweppes fizzy drink factory, 71 years ago. Davie, 93, worked with lorries while Margaret, 89, was an operator.
During their courtship days, Davie would miss his bus almost every day and stay back after his work shift so that he could spend time with Margaret.
“Her granny used to say, ‘that poor boy’ because I was always missing the bus and having to cycle all the way home just so I could stay and talk to Margaret,” said Davie.
Not long after, in 1951, the pair got married at Margaret’s mother’s house, and the wedding reception only cost them 25 pounds (approx. US$35).
The couple lived in Cumbernauld, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, and had two children. In January 2021, the couple moved to Rosepark Care Home, Uddingston.
On celebrating seven long decades together, the couple shared that the secret to their marriage is “liking each other,” and “having a laugh.”
“We still love each other as much as the day we met,“ said Margaret. ”The past 70 years have been absolute bliss with Davie—he is my best friend, and I can’t wait to enjoy more times like these together at Rosepark.”
On their 70th anniversary, on March 31 this year, the staff at the care home tried to make their day special. Local businesses donated balloons, banners, and a three-tier cake to the two love birds.
Care home staff also gathered pictures of the couple to create a backdrop for a three-course meal prepared especially by the home’s chefs.
“It was so kind for the staff and the local shops to think of us and make our day by showering us with such generous gifts and surprises—we can’t thank everyone enough,” said Margaret.
“Davie and Margaret are a really wonderful couple,“ Annette Frew, Activity coordinator, said. ”They are always having fun together and are the perfect example of soulmates.
“Both are full of character and never cease to get us all laughing away.”
