We have an impact on almost everyone whose path we cross, from family to complete strangers. As such, it’s important to form the habit of making a good impression at all times, to all people.

Be Aware

Opportunities to set a good example occur almost non-stop, from interactions with coworkers to driving across town in rush-hour traffic. The secret is to slow down and be aware that you leave an impression. Using turn signals and saying “good morning” to coworkers are ways to choose to present a pleasant demeanor. Holding doors for strangers or letting them go ahead of you at the grocery store may inspire them to spread happiness, too.

Rise Above Distractions

Everyone experiences situations that may be upsetting, but that doesn’t justify projecting negative reactions to those who are completely uninvolved. Take a deep breath and set it aside, emitting a positive and pleasant composure. Setting this example in the workplace is especially valuable. On a related note, make time to offer comfort to those who may be going through a rough time; be discreet and thoughtful, giving them your full focus.

Be Helpful

It’s easy to assume that being a role model means demonstrating good behavior to those who are younger, but the reality is that everyone may benefit from your examples. Making time to help a young relative with their homework or collecting the dishes after a family meal, taking them to the kitchen, and washing them—without being asked to do so—are just two examples of providing demonstrations of behavior worthy of imitation.

Be Humble

Self-absorbed behavior is the exact opposite of actions worthy of a good role model; the idea is to focus on others without feeling the need to lecture or draw attention to one’s own self or accomplishments. A very effective way to be a great role model is to be somewhat self-deprecating, very patient, and very attentive.

Share Success

Those who have achieved a level of success in life, even if they are not celebrities, sports figures, or business tycoons, can help others do well, too. Being a mentor to a youngster is a great way to give back to the community, as is simply being a good friend who can be relied on to lend a helping hand. Helping others succeed sets a wonderful example.
