Artist Uses Fine Blades to Create Mind-Blowing Papercut Works of Art From a Single Sheet of Paper

For the past 10 years, Pippa Dyrlaga, an artist based in Yorkshire, England, has been employing fine blades with an oh-so-delicate touch to create intricate traditional papercut works.

Drawing inspiration from things she sees around her and amidst the natural environment, Pippa cuts each work from a single piece of paper.

“The simplicity of a blank sheet of paper appeals to me," she shared on her website. “Paper is used in so many aspects of our lives and used to communicate with each other, and I want to do this through my work.”

After getting the inspiration and settling on a specific design, the artist begins her work on a blank piece of paper.

“They are first drawn out by hand on the reverse of the paper and then cut using a scalpel,“ she explains. ”They can take hours to complete, and I find the process is as important to me as the finished pieces.”

After cutting out the finished hand-drawn sketches, a delicate touch is needed, as some connections are just millimeters in width, with lace-like threads of paper seeming to weave patters through mid-air.

“There is nothing as ordinary as a blank sheet of paper, but it has so many possibilities and can be turned into something beautiful or meaningful, without adding anything to it,” she shared.

Pippa, who holds a bachelor’s degree in contemporary art practice from Leeds Metropolitan University, and a master’s of arts in art and design, showcases her artwork on her social media pages.

Recently, Pippa created a goldfish cutout, done in color, which has amassed a fair amount of attention on her Facebook page.

“It is lovely! You are one talented gal!” commented Louisa Hermione Harris.

During her childhood, Pippa lived in a canal boat near waterways surrounded by the best of British wildlife, and this unique lifestyle is what inspires many of her creations.
