Album Review: Steven Isserlis – ‘Dvorák – Cello Concertos’
Dvorák – Cello Concertos, Steven Isserlis Hyperion
Updated:

At last Isserlis, now 55, has recorded the Dvorak concertos; the wait has been well worth it. He gives a splendid account of the early A major work but it is his reading of the great B minor masterpiece that reflects deep thought over many years. The work was much influenced by Dvorák’s visit to the Niagra Falls, his native Bohemia and unrequited love. From the wonderful opening the listener is taken on an epic journey reflecting his home sickness, love of nature, and tragic personal loss. Isserlis and the Mahler Chamber orchestra under David Harding give a fine performance aided by superb flute and clarinet soloists. A must buy for Dvorak lovers.
