David Lynch, one of the only remaining true auteurs, has turned his attention to music. Crazy Clown Time is impressive for a man already so well respected. The music is full of the dramatic tension and moodiness you would expect but what is surprising is how modern and dance orientated some of it is. Alongside the 1950s rock ‘n’ roll/blues tracks – full of those ever-so-familiar riffs you'd find on the Twin Peaks soundtrack – are sparkling electronic beats and chopped up samples. Lynch’s voice is ever-present throughout, sometimes to comical effect, but often the emotion feels incredibly genuine. This is not a rich and famous man toying with a side-project, it is an accomplished, diverse and entertaining album.
