DETROIT—Shen Yun Performing Arts’ portrayal of traditional Chinese culture at the Detroit Opera House on Saturday evening left Keith P. Harrington nothing short of amazed.
Mr. Harrington, an investment broker and Vice President—Wealth Management with UBS in Detroit, was particularly impressed with the piece Lotus Fairies, which features dancers holding long silken fans as they glide across the stage. In the East, the lotus has long been a symbol of purity and divine perfection.
“It was absolutely incredible, the talent of the women and what they can do. I mean it’s absolutely beautiful, and I’m a guy! I thought it was terrific,” Mr. Harrington said.
Classical Chinese dance, award-winning vocalists and solo musicians, an orchestra joining instruments from both the East and West, colorful costumes, and a unique animated backdrop culminate in a lively, sophisticated show, according to the Shen Yun website.
An art form passed down and enriched over thousands of years, classical Chinese dance has deep roots in traditional Chinese ideas about beauty and grace, says the website. It is also physically demanding, incorporating dramatic flips and tumbling techniques that share a common ancestry with martial arts.
“The ability of the dancers is phenomenal,” said Mr. Harrington, who has worked in the financial industry for more than 35 years.
Mr. Harrington’s companion, Renée, a psychotherapist, was also delighted with the production.
“I loved the show,“ she said. ”I loved the music and the scenery.”
Mr. Harrington concluded by saying that “the beauty, the delicacy, and the tradition” in Shen Yun left him with a memorable impression.
“It’s pretty amazing.”
