ROSEMONT, Ill.—Terry Rolecek, an entrepreneur in financial technology, found Shen Yun Performing Arts to be a celebration of a culture once-nearly lost.

“There’s a lot of historical culture, great music, and the technology was really interesting in the storytelling. It was really, really fascinating storytelling,” said Mr. Rolecek after seeing Shen Yun at the Rosemont Theatre on April 25.

“As an American, we know we think our culture is 200 years old, and then we see this and we realize that we’ve missed a lot of it. A lot of culture, I mean, that’s been around for so long, and everything sort of evolved from this,” he said.

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

There was much in the performance that Mr. Rolecek said he was not aware of, including how spiritual Chinese culture was before communism.

“I thought it was really interesting. I didn’t know that that was a big part of Chinese culture,” he said.

He thought the overall performance was “absolutely wonderful.

“The technology is really interesting, going back and forth in the screens. The dancers and that soprano singing was outstanding. I never heard anybody sing like that. Just her voice, the piano. I mean, it was just, it was a wonderful experience all in all.”

He said the experience was one of “happiness.”

“Like the celebration of history and you know a whole culture that’s come about,” he added.
