ROSEMONT, Ill.—Music director Gia Martin was wowed by the voice of the bel canto singers in Shen Yun Performing Arts, seeing the performance on April 25 at the Rosemont Theatre.

“The voice is beautiful, beautiful, very world-class voices,” said Ms. Martin, who saw the performance with her friends, a singer and a priest, who said they would be seeing Shen Yun again and “would not miss it for the world.”

“Beautiful. Beautiful music, beautiful performance, beautiful message, especially message, especially message,” she said, adding that it was fitting for Easter with messages of hope and faith. “The way they perform, it’s very connected to, where are we going, what is our goal—it’s heaven. That’s how we felt today overall, was heaven and earth connected.”

New York-based Shen Yun, the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, has a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, a civilization that valued harmony between heaven, earth, and humankind.
The spirituality of traditional Chinese culture touched audience members of different faiths, who said they felt the artists conveyed something universal.

John Balluff, a priest, said he saw details that differed from his own Christian faith, but messages that were universal and shared.

“It’s a beautiful message of virtue and also of seeing more than what you just see,” he said. “It’s a spiritual understanding of human beings, not just work, a job, make money, buy things. So even the themes of, well, it’s a spiritual message, which resonates with me.”

“It’s beautiful. I think it’s very beautiful. And important,” he added.

Like many audience members, Mr. Balluff said that the colors he saw in Shen Yun were outstanding, but he added that perhaps there was a spiritual element here as well.

Some people who have near-death experiences glimpse something otherworldly, he explained, and he has known some people who have told him about their own experiences.

“I knew somebody who had one, and one of the things that some of them say is that colors are so much more vibrant. And even since people encounter faith and re-look at the same world, it’s the color that stands out to them that they didn’t notice before,” he said.
