PHOENIX—For Mr. Valenzuela, a language researcher at a local university, Shen Yun’s performance was something he could completely relate to and understand. “Even though I have no knowledge of Mandarin or Chinese, I completely understand what is going on. I can relate to the mythology. … It is just an excellent show.”
Shen Yun Performing Arts, a New York-based performance company founded by leading Chinese artists, is seeking to revive China’s traditional culture and present it to audiences around the world through Chinese classical dance and music.
Mr. Valenzuela, a Native American, was thrilled to find parallels between the show and his research. “This is excellent, this is very, very, good, because part of what I am doing my research on is oral history of something very similar to what I think was put forth here … to save the tradition so that it is not lost.
“I have seen Broadway productions here. I have seen other productions, and this is one of the best I have seen. The graphics that adds to the scene—it’s excellent, everything is synchronized so well. It is so fast yet everything is exactly as planned. … I haven’t seen anything that is out of place.”
