ESCONDIDO, Calif.—Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company kicked off their stay in Escondido on Tuesday at the California Center for the Arts. Dr. Eric Greenberg, and his daughter, Stephanie Wallace, were two of the happiest audience members at the show.

Dr. Greenberg, a physician, said Shen Yun made him think of “the traditions, the history, and the elegance and the culture of China.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun has spearheaded a revival of China’s 5,000-year-old culture, bringing its cherished stories and folklore to the stage, as well as portrayals of happenings in modern China.

But Shen Yun isn’t just about storytelling.

“It was incredible,” said Stephanie, a physician’s assistant. “The visual stimulation was out of this world. From the backdrops, to the movements, to the costumes, it was just incredible.”

The scenes and stories that Shen Yun brings to life are brought about in many ways. The dance pieces use classical Chinese dance, an art form that has been developed over China’s thousands of years of culture, and is thus capable of a wide and expansive range of expression. But all of the dancers are in costumes unique to each piece, bursting with color. And in the background (and at times interacting with the performers) is a digital backdrop that sets the stage and brings the setting to life.

“The costumes were remarkably colorful,” commented Dr. Greenberg. “I looked forward to seeing the different costumes in each of your skits. Every piece. I think that added a degree of elegance to the performance.”

Dr. Greenberg said he is already thinking about next year. “Look forward to seeing it next year,” he said. “I wanted to see it last year. I was unfortunate, and I could not see it.”
