TORONTO—It was the third time for Mr. McNeil to attend a Divine Performing Arts show in Toronto, and each time he has not been disappointed.
“This is not just training, technique, this is dancers laying it all out there,” Mr. McNeil said after Friday evening’s show at the John Bassett Theatre. “They put their heart and their souls into the dance, and clearly what we saw on stage was a result of that. We don’t see that kind of performance very often. I’m happy I was here. I’m happy that I saw this because we don’t get to see this very often.”
Mr. McNeil is the Chair of a national ethnic media organization in Canada, a long-time radio broadcaster, and a former organizer of a North American street festival.
He singled out a couple of performances in the show, one being The Mystical Phoenix, in which dancers in flowing dresses move with quick, light steps and distinct hand movements to depict the phoenix, regarded as the king of all birds.
“The colours were wonderful and indeed it shows the inner soul of the dancers,” Mr. McNeil said of the dance.
He also highlighted Dance of the Snow-Capped Mountains, in which dancers in long sleeves, sturdy boots and prayer beads dance energetically in Tibetan character.
“I thought that was just out of this world,” Mr. McNeil said. And the colours again, oh wow—the blending of the colours is just so magnificent. It’s a feast for the eyes.
Divine Performing Arts will perform in Toronto through to Wednesday night before moving on to Montreal and then New York’s famed Radio City Music Hall, perhaps the most highly regarded performing venue in the world.
