“I think it’s great that it’s in town. It’s really, really good,” said Ian Nieman, who has worked with internationally renowned recording artists like Nelly Furtado and Mariah Carey, as well as major networks including NBC and Disney.
New York-based DPA is a group of leading performers who share in a vision of reviving the traditional Chinese culture that has been all but destroyed under communist rule.
Mr. Nieman complimented the music in the show, which features renowned solo musicians along with a masterful orchestra that is unique in that it combines Western and Chinese instruments.
“There’s some interesting new sounds that I haven’t heard before,” Mr. Nieman said.
He said he loved the pieces “Dragon Springs Drums” and “Drummers of the Tang Court,” noting that “it’s nice to see choreographed drums.”
Soprano Huang Pi-ju, one of the show’s three solo singers, also especially impressed him. Mr. Nieman described her voice as “really captivating.”
“I thought she had an amazing voice,” he added.
In its celebration of traditional Chinese culture, DPA is the only company in the world that performs pure, strictly authentic Chinese classical dance as part of its repertoire.
