Wallpaper that looks like beadboard paneling is a clever way to add charm and texture to an ordinary room. This lookalike wallcovering is a less expensive upgrade and easier to install than beadboard paneling, a pricey improvement that requires carpentry tools, not to mention carpentry skills. The beadboard wall covering makes any room more appealing with less time and money involved.

A beadboard chair rail is a popular addition to plain-Jane walls and it’s an almost instant upgrade. You’ll find a selection of prepasted beadboard wallpaper sold at paint and decorating retailers, home centers and online.

An installer will charge $610, including labor and material, to hang prepasted beadboard wallpaper below a chair rail in a 10-by-12-foot room. You can buy the wallcovering for $135, do the job and pocket a 78 percent saving. You’ll need wall sizing to apply to the surface of the wall to make it easier to install and reposition the material. You’ll also need sharp scissors, a razor cutter, a paper hanging brush, measuring tape, a plumb bob or laser level, a bucket of water, a sponge, a flat work surface, and a drop cloth to protect the floor.

Follow the directions from the manufacturer of the wallcovering and work slowly to avoid making any miscuts. If you plan to paint the chair rail, do it before installing the wallpaper.
