NEW YORK—An enthusiastic audience turned out to see New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on June 24, giving the performance a standing ovation and two curtain calls.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s really exciting. I love it!” said Meret Goetschel, a fashion designer with Alice Yim in New York.

Ms. Goetschel said she “really loved the colors” in each dance. “The visuals we were shown were amazing,” she said.

Shen Yun seeks to revive the age-old Chinese cultural heritage that has been all but lost during 60 years of communist rule. The company’s main form of expression revolves around classical Chinese dance, an art form that has been passed down for thousands of years.

After viewing the performance, Ms. Goetschel said that she would like to learn more about the culture of China.

‘Very Colorful’

Also attending Friday‘s performance was Solomon Masimy, a dentist originally from Afghanistan, an ancient neighbor of China and historically part of the “Silk Road” connecting China and Europe.

Mr. Masimy said the dances were very well choreographed and was struck by how synchronized the dancers were. “I thought the show was great, very colorful.” He said he was excited about seeing the second half of the show.

According to Shen Yun‘s program book, “the rigors of Chinese dance go well beyond technique” to give the audience a more meaningful experience. To achieve this, the dancers have to “infuse their movements with a certain inner spirit,” reads the book.
