With vultures circling around her, this poor dog stood little chance of survival, that is, until her rescuers arrived.
It was obvious to the rescuers that the surrounded dog, chained up to a tree, was starving, and goodness knows how long she had been left like that.
It was Christmas time 2014, and people in Greensboro, North Carolina, had begun to take notice of a number of circling vultures around a particular area, and over the next few days their numbers began increasing.
They seemed to be zeroing in on one particular house, so neighbors decided to take a look in the backyard, as there seemed to be no one home. What they found was disturbing; a young pit bull puppy was chained up to a tree, surrounded by a large number of vultures. The pup was obviously starving and probably not far from death.
Animal rescuers were alerted and quickly arrived at the scene.
Although vultures don’t attack live animals, the birds would have sensed the impending death of the dog, and were waiting for a feast.
Rescuers quickly chased the birds away and managed to remove the frightened pooch.
Local news outlets carried the story, and as a result, there were many offers from kindhearted folk to adopt the pup.
Keana Lynch and Travis Henley gave Lilo, as they named her, a forever home, and she has gradually come to realize there will be no more being chained up and starving ... nor vultures.
What’s more, Keana brought Lilo to visit local schools so children could learn about rescued animals.
Hopefully, when they become adults, they will know how to act responsibly towards dogs, cats, and other creatures that share this planet with us.
And Lilo even gets to play dress-ups for the schools she visits, much to the delight of the children.
