A delivery driver has revealed his top trick to prevent a car windscreen from icing up and, surprisingly, all it takes is a bottle of vodka.
Jack Mentiply, 26, says he’s found the perfect solution for icy car windscreens in the winter months, and the trick happens to save him anywhere between five and 10 minutes during his rounds.
Mr. Mentiply, who is from Albrough, Scotland, claims a spray of vodka on a car windscreen and “a few shots” in the screenwash refill prevent the car windscreen from freezing.
In a video, Mr. Mentiply demonstrated the simple hack by pouring vodka on his windscreen and then filling his screen wash with the remaining bottle of alcohol but added that any cheap bottle of spirit would do the trick.
Explaining why he chooses to use alcohol instead of any other solution, he said vodka doesn’t freeze which helps in preventing things from icing up.
“I thought it was a more well-known trick, to be honest,” Mr. Mentiply said. “It is something that I’ve known for quite a long time, and I’ve been doing it since I’ve been driving.”
Before filming the video, Mr. Mentiply was spotted by his neighbor using the trick. Curious to know more, he asked Mr. Mentiply what he was doing and he shared the hack, saying, “Vodka is what I’ve always used.”
“It is very strong so I'd have thought it would be the best type of alcohol to use,” Mr. Mentiply said.
In the past, Mr. Mentiply had experimented with a store-brought screen de-icer but found it to be less effective than the vodka trick.
The delivery driver thus decided to share his trick on a social media platform where it racked up over 1.8 million views from stunned road users.
He then did a follow-up video sharing a bonus hack for creating a vodka screen spray without having to pour it directly.
