Santorini - an island in the southern Aegean Sea classically known as Thera and officially known as Thira - is considered, by those well-traveled, to be one of the most romantic islands in the world. With its beautiful cliff-perched white villages, characteristic little blue-domed churches, friendly locals, famous sunsets, and breathtaking views, it could be effectively argued that it’s impossible not to fall in love with this picture-perfect Greek island ...
Santorini is, understandably, a popular venue for weddings, honeymoons, anniversaries, or any type of romantic getaway. With no shortage of luxury hotels in Santorini, you'll have no trouble finding the most exquisite accommodations within an incredibly romantic setting.
I recently visited Santorini and found - amongst the wide range of luxury hotels - some that are not only exquisite but have also distinguished themselves with their uniqueness.
Here are my favorites:
Astarte Suites
Astarte Suites, an 11-suite family-owned boutique hotel built on a dramatic cliff in Akrotiri. Each suite offers amazing views of the sea overlooking the Caldera (a cauldron-like volcanic feature usually formed by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption). Breakfast is served on your private terrace where you can also dine.
When the hotel opened in 2004, the location - far away from the hustle and bustle - was the biggest challenge. It wasn’t long, however, before this spectacular secluded location became one of the hotel’s biggest assets. Another feature that often draws tourists is the breathtaking infinity pool.
Kapari Natural Resort
Kapari Natural Resort, a small family owned luxury boutique hotel, is located in the picturesque cliff-perched village of Imerovigli. The rooms offer stunning sea-views, as well as spectacular views of the volcano and the famous Skaros rock. Breakfast also offers a wide selection of locally-made regional dishes.
This private estate has a history of over 300 years. In 1956 an earthquake destroyed most of Imerovigli after which the historic houses were rebuilt. This private family estate was transformed in 2010 into a resort with luxury rooms, with state-of-the-art amenities, built in the traditional cave style.
Canaves Oia Suites
Canaves Oia Suites, a second-generation family owned luxury boutique hotel and a certified member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, is located in the beautiful village of Oia. All suites offer majestic sea- and caldera-views. Breakfast can be enjoyed around the pool.
17th century caves carved into the cliff sides have been transformed into elegant luxurious suites. All suites are decorated in the traditional island style and several suites include private verandas and hot tubs. Private dining can be experienced in the Petra Gourmet Restaurant.
Private Pool Villa
Through the website “Vacations Abroad” I was able to find a luxury private pool villa in Vourvoulos, located on a property surrounded by farms, fields, and the sea. A homemade breakfast is served each morning in the panoramic breakfast room.
Each spacious and well-equipped villa has a separate entrance, a private pool, outdoor grill, parking, as well as a free rental car, and beautiful views of the Aegean Sea. Peace and tranquility included!
