Tulsi was one of the restaurants chosen to serve some of the top culinary talent in the world, the finalists of the Specialty Food Association’s sofi Awards, at New York City’s Javits Center earlier this month. The Epoch Times visited Tulsi and asked the restaurant to recreate what its chef served.
Tulsi, which translates as “divine basil,” focuses on Indian cuisine created by Chef Hemant Mathur, a 30-year veteran of Indian fine cuisine and master of tandoor cooking. For the sofis, Mathur decided to deliver one of his signature appetizers, Mung Bean Chaat.
A variety of ingredients go into Mung Bean Chaat, which is served with layered baked potato chips. Fresh mung beans are sprouted on site, and then tossed in a tamarind mint sauce, with roasted cumin, lemon juice, cilantro, red chilli powder and finely diced avocado, onion, and tomatoes, and served with a selection of three sauces.
