Over a hundred years since the sinking of the Titanic the DeepOcean company has organized a touristic expedition to the remains of the Titanic. In the context of this renowned event, the question arises if diving trips will be the new business for the travel agencies of the future.
The Emerging Diving Trend
Nowadays many are the potentates that decide to spend some of their money in buying their own private submarine tailored to their needs and tastes. It is believed that more than 100 millionaires have their own submarine although only three of them are known: Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, businessman Richard Banson and Roman Abramovich, the Rockefeller from Siberia. We do not know the exact details about their expeditions or about how they decorate their vessels but what matters here is the fact that a new trend is being imposed in the 21st century: diving trips. It is believed that in 20 years time not only rich people will be able to do diving trips since cruises under the sea will be common and cheap. Will Julius Verne dream come true? Everything seems to indicate that it will, in fact the dream has already started to become true, there are some companies that organize diving trips although they are very expensive and practically inaccessible for the most people.
Expedition to the Titanic
DeepOcean Expeditions Company organizes diving trips and its last expedition was known worldwide. On the occasion of the 100 years anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, the company organized four expeditions to be held during the European summer. They will give some privileged tourists the possibility to marvel with the remains of the legendary Titanic. 80 will be the lucky ones that will see with their own eyes the eminent Titanic’s stair, the remains of the orchestra, and other precious objects that belong to the most famous scenes of Titanic’s movie. The trip has a cost of 45.120 Euros and lasts 13 days although the immersion itself only lasts eight hours. The trip starts in San Juan de Terranova where a boat carries tourists to the exact place the ship sank, which is located in international waters 380 kilometers far from the southeast coast of Canada. In addition to admiring the remains of the Titanic, the journey consists of a series of scientific talks and evenings where everybody can share anecdotes and experiences about the eight hours of diving. The company also foresees for this year an expedition for fans of history to Bismarck battleship, that remains untouched at about 4,791 meters ahead, and to the thermal springs of the Azores for admirers of nature beauty.
The Necker Nymph
As we already mentioned, millionaire Richard Banson is one of the greatest fans of submarines, actually he owns its own private submarine, the Necker Nymph, that uses to do very expensive touristic expeditions. Who can travel on the Necker Nymph? Those who are staying at Necker Island in the Caribbean (daily fees of 22,000 dollars) or those who are disposed to rent Banson’s Catamaran for one week. Necker Nymph can stay under the water for a maximum of two hours and at no more than 40 meters deep, it is definitely not suitable for visiting Titanic’s remains. However, the next objective of businessman Banson is to descend up to Mariana Trench before the end of the year and that is why he launched a project called Virgin Oceanic which is intent to reach a depth of 800 meters.
Diving trips seem to be one of the future emerging trends in a world where everything has been tried and tourists demand for new experiences.
