One of the most beautiful aspects of the holiday season is the spirit of love and generosity that it inspires in all of those willing to be captured by it. It’s a time that reminds us to step outside of our own personal interests, think of others, and share our kindness and abundance with whomever we can.

Giving to others truly does fill one’s heart with joy. Whether it’s a helping hand, a simple smile, or a lovely gift, the reward goes not only to the recipient but to the giver, as well. Generosity is an immediate mood booster—a happiness quick fix. If you’re looking for the selfish rewards of generosity, there are plenty.

It seems that deep down, we’re wired to give. When we act in the service of others, we can’t help but to feel wonderful inside. Scientists have connected generosity to better physical and mental health, but you don’t need science to show you how great it is to be a giver.

Gifts for the Giver

Have you made someone smile lately? Helped a family member with something, perhaps? Shared a passing “hello” with a stranger on the street? Made a donation? Held the door open for the person behind you? Offered a hug? Taken care of the responsibilities that you manage at home? All of these seemingly simple acts are generous, and if you think about it, you probably feel pretty great about them.

Giving has other benefits. It enhances your relationships to be helpful and kindhearted to others. It motivates you to live up to your potential so that you may continue to fulfill your responsibilities and act in service to others. It inspires those around you to also be generous and kind, spreading like the best possible contagion. It gives your life meaning and makes your complaints and desires seem small.

As the holiday season gets underway, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, the shopping lists, and the endless holiday parties. The perfect antidote to the stress or sense of being overwhelmed that you may feel is to stay focused on giving.

Ways to Give

There are many ways to spread that holiday cheer. Volunteering your time is one of the simplest yet most impactful ways to give of yourself. There are countless organizations and charities that could use an extra hand during the holiday season. Whether it’s serving meals at a local soup kitchen, wrapping gifts for underprivileged children, or spending time with the elderly at a nursing home, your presence can bring comfort and joy to those who need it most.

Another way to practice generosity is by making a donation. Consider making a financial contribution to a cause that aligns with your values. If you have old clothes, toys, or household items that are still in good condition, donate them to a thrift store or a charitable organization. Perhaps, you can connect with a family in need in your local area and ensure that they have a wonderful holiday season, too. Even the smallest contribution might make a big difference in someone else’s life.

During the holiday season, take the time to connect with your neighbors and offer a helping hand. Shovel their driveway after a snowfall, bring over a warm meal, or offer to babysit their children for a few hours so they can have some much-needed relaxation time. As delivery people inevitably come back again and again throughout the season, leave them drinks and snacks with a thank-you note. These small gestures of kindness can strengthen your community and bring you closer to those around you.

Continue the tradition of sending holiday cards to your loved ones. In the digital age, receiving a card or letter is a rare and special treat. Take some time to sit down and write a heartfelt message to someone whom you care about. Let them know how much they mean to you and how grateful you are to have them in your life. This simple act of thoughtfulness can brighten their day and warm their heart.

Have fun with random acts of kindness. Pay for the person’s coffee in line behind you at the café, leave a generous tip for your server, or surprise a stranger with a small gift. These acts may seem small, but they have the potential to create a ripple effect of kindness that can extend far beyond the holiday season.

Make the most of the holiday season by embracing a spirit of giving. You’ll be so very glad that you did.
