CHICAGO—Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company performed to an enthusiastic crowd at the Civic Opera House on Friday, April 22.
“It is just very wonderful and very exciting. This is something you don’t see every day,” said Mr. Ivan E. Irizarry, deputy district director for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in Illinois. Mr. Irizarry was accompanied by his wife, Ruth.
Shen Yun’s mission is to reclaim and renew the true, divinely inspired cultural heritage of China. The program consists of approximately 20 performances, including humorous folk tales such as The Monkey King Outwits Pigsy and graceful dances such as Manchurian Elegance.
“After reading the program and listening to the explanations, I think it’s a learning experience—the culture, the tradition, the history about the Chinese people,” Mr. Irizarry said.
“I’ve always admired the Chinese culture. It’s very interesting. Shen Yun gives a good history of what the culture and the traditions are all about. They express it very nicely. It’s a wonderful group,” Mr. Irizarry added.
Mrs. Irizarry was equally impressed with Shen Yun, especially with the Northeastern Drummers piece: “The young ladies with the drums—you don’t think that they’re playing anything. You have to realize that they really are playing the drums. I thought that was fascinating.
“I have never seen a show like this. You go to the theater to see the opera, and each opera is different depending on the composer, but this was entirely different because every scene—and the music—is entirely different. I loved it! I thought it was beautiful. I’m enjoying it tremendously,” Mrs. Irizarry said.
“I think everyone should see it and learn to appreciate the different cultures,” she added.
