SPOKANE, Wash.—The second Shen Yun Performing Arts show in the Pacific Northwest was in Spokane, Wash. Named after a local Native American tribe, Spokane is located near the border of Idaho, near mountains, and has the Spokane River running through the city.

Ms. Mobley, the director of the Spokane Arts Commission, was in the audience of Spokane’s first Shen Yun performance.

She was “very excited” to be at the show, adding that Shen Yun “is really beautiful—I knew it would be. The choreography is really lovely. The costumes are beautiful.”

Of the performances, she said that she really liked the colorful dances: “The one where the women are wearing the really bright skirts. The Yi people [in Dance of the Yi] were pretty cool. I liked Welcoming Spring. That was really lovely, with the fans, the fans were beautiful.”

Dance of the Yi features women with very colorful, rainbow skirts dancing in unison with the orchestral music. The Yi people are an ethnic group in southwest China. Many performances in Shen Yun also feature some of the ethnic groups in China, such as the Yi, Tibetans, and the Mongolians.

Welcoming Spring is also another dance that features bright colors. The dancers are adorned with flowers celebrating the coming of spring.

Ms. Mobley said that Shen Yun is a “harking back to traditions that people love, and how could you not be romantic about that?”

She also added that the “choreography was really good. Their timing was really good—it’s wonderful.”

Afterwards, she said she would recommend the show to more people.

“I’m glad you’re here. It’s better than I expected. The dancing was exquisite.”

According to their Web site, the mission of the New York-based Shen Yun is to revive the true, five-millennia-old artistic tradition of China and to breathe new life into traditional Chinese culture.
