NEW YORK—The second of seven Shen Yun performances in New York City came to a close with standing ovations on Feb. 13 at Radio City Music Hall on the eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year.
“The music is very good. The performances are excellent, well timed, and I think well practiced. From a visual point, it’s absolutely beautiful!” said John Dibari, CEO of an international technology company.
“It’s very interesting, very good. Very entertaining,” said Mr. Dibari. “I would recommend it.”
The performers of Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company present classical Chinese dance as well as Chinese ethnic and folk dance.
The dance styles pull from China’s 5,000 years of culture. In addition to mastering the various flips and movements, the performers also need to perfect “yun,” which is the Chinese word for the cultural bearing behind the movements. This allows the dancer to “fully portray a given character’s disposition or mood, or convey the sensibilities of a particular region or dynasty,” according to the program book.
This element resonated with Mr. Dibari who said the performances gave him “insight into their culture.”
“I think they’re very talented and very sincere,” Mr. Dibari said. “It’s different enough to want to see it. Different format, the way they’re doing it.”
To help bridge the cultural gap, each act is introduced by both an English and a Chinese emcee. Mr. Dibari said the explanation between dances and performances was “very nice. Especially when you don’t know too much about someone’s culture.”
“I think that’s very entertaining,” he said.
Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company opened its first show of the Chinese Lunar New Year at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Saturday. Shen Yun will perform at Radio City Music Hall in New York the weekends of Feb. 13-14 and Feb. 20-21.
