NEW YORK—Patrician Chin, founder of VP Records, took in Shen Yun’s last performance at New York’s famed Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, February 21. VP Records is a long standing independent label which has focused on Reggae and artists from the Caribbean for thirty years.

Ms. Chin responded enthusiastically to the performance. She said, “Oh it’s so beautiful! The music, the background, the costumes, it touches my heart. It’s very special.”

Two of the dances tell stories set in contemporary China. Ms. Chin described her feelings while watching those and said that it was “very emotional to see the struggle and how the people overcome the struggle.”

Ms. Chin, a New Yorker who came from Jamaica, is 3rd generation Chinese on her mother’s side, and her father is from India. “So we know the struggle,” she said.

“This is my second time seeing the show and I truly enjoy the sceneries, the music, the dancing, [it] touches my heart.”

Also coming to see the show was Brian, a classical musician.

Brian, who only gave his first name, plays french horn with the New York Repertory Orchestra, (NYRO). His group was honored by the Omega Ensemble of New York with a “Gift to the City” award.

He said that it is “fantastic” that the dancers perform to live music, played by the Shen Yun Touring Company Orchestra.

“It gets the excitement, presence; you can’t really duplicate with a recorder,” he said.

Like many in the audience, Brian enjoyed the handmade costumes that the performers wear, and also noted the visual innovation in the performance: “I like the projections very much.”

Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company will perform next in Rochester, New York at the Rochester Auditorium Theater on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28.
