FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—Since 1991, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts has brought arts and cultural experiences to Broward County and Fort Lauderdale. Tonight was an exceptional occasion.
On the eve of the Chinese lunar New Year, Shen Yun Performing Arts—the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company—graced South Florida with story-based dances, vocal solos, an orchestra that blends Western and Eastern instruments, unique handmade costumes, and beautiful animated backdrops.
Tarek Kirschen, Miami-based CEO of Glozal, accompanied Monique Hewitt to the show. “Everything is so light and happy,” he said. “It’s a good feeling.”
New York-based Shen Yun revives the spirit of traditional Chinese culture. Through classical Chinese dance and ethnic and folk dance, Shen Yun dancers carry the essence of Chinese cultural expression in their movements.
Ms. Hewitt said, “What I am always mesmerized with is how everything is always so aligned and so in sync.”
Mostly new to the West, classical Chinese dance includes hundreds of extremely intricate poses and movements, requires full-body integration, and places emphasis on the dancer’s inner expression and its connection with his or her movements.

Every year, Shen Yun unveils a new lineup of dances, songs, and musical scores—all originals.
Ms. Hewitt described the sound of the tenors and sopranos as beautiful and said, “It resonates throughout the whole place.”
Mr. Kirschen felt Shen Yun was “very happy and smooth.”
Shen Yun will be performing twice more at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, on the nights of Feb. 3 and 4.
Ms. Hewitt said she knew some friends who would love the show. ”So I am going to really recommend this highly.”
