VIENNA, Austria—Benjamin Dachsmacher, a young Austrian jazz musician who is presently studying the jazz-saxophone attended the closing Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company presentation at the Wiener Stadthalle on Wednesday evening, May 4.

“I loved the show. It was beautiful and very impressive.”

He saw for the first time the Shen Yun performance and, as a matter of fact, also a classical Chinese dance performance. He gleaned an impression of China’s history by watching the New York-based performers, which taught him something new and unexpected.

“Well, excellent choreography and the different stories the Shen Yun presented were fantastic.”

Shen Yun not only presents stories from ancient China, but also from more modern times.

One such scene, Our Story is a true story from modern China. This piece tells of a beloved teacher who guides her pupils not just in the art of writing, but life. One day she writes the Chinese words for “truth,” “compassion,” and “tolerance” on the blackboard when state police burst into her classroom and take her away. The loyal students rise to protect their teacher, but fail in the face of police violence and the young teacher is killed for her beliefs.

“The scene with the teacher was one of the highlights because it was presented so well,” Mr. Dachsmacher said. “I have heard that this Buddhist-based cultivation system is banned in China. I think it is most terrible what is going on in China and should not be tolerated. It is undignified and inhuman what the Chinese Communist Party is perpetrating.”

On a more cheerful note he said that he was quite impressed with the scene Herding on the Grasslands a scene where the dancers mirror horsemen gallop on the steppes.

But, for this Saxophone student the most important part of the Shen Yun was the music performed on Western and Eastern instruments by a full orchestra.

“The music was beautiful and the musicians are superb. To me, this Chinese kind of music is marvelous.”

He hadn’t been exposed to the Chinese type of music, but will make sure that he will learn more about it in the future.

“The tones were absolute wonderful and fostered a meditative environment. It was cool, unique and so different.”
