NEW YORK—Many artists who have seen the Shen Yun Performing Arts show comment on Shen Yun’s use of colors—bright and vivid, beautiful and harmonious, something they have never seen before; among them in New York was world renowned Chinese artist Lefu Gu.
After watching the performance that celebrated the Chinese New Year’s Eve on Feb. 13, at Radio City Music Hall, Mr. Gu said he was most impressed by the use of color in the costumes and the backdrop.
“Normally, using too much bright color could make things seem vulgar,” he said. “What made Shen Yun special is that the colors are bright but not vulgar. Bright and magnificent. The dynamic backdrop gave a very strong sense of space.”
Mr. Gu said the dances were very beautiful, and “especially the voices of the solo singers, they were beyond my expectation.”
He often returns to mainland China, but said he refuses to see any performances while there as they are “very vulgar.”
In contrast, the elegance of New York-based Shen Yun comes from the fact that the program contains “inner meaning and enhances the morals and retains many traditions,” he said.
Shen Yun Performing Arts is independent of China’s communist regime and seeks to revive the true, five-millennia-old artistic tradition of China that thrived before decades of suppression by the Chinese communist state. The company seeks to breathe new life into traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese dance, songs, and music.
Mr. Gu first came to the U.S. in 1989 as a visiting professor. He has taught in China at the Department of Fine Arts in Nanjing Normal University; and in the U.S. at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, and the Albany Institute of History and Art.
His paintings have been exhibited in many countries including the United States, Japan, England, Yugoslavia as well as China. His art works have won numerous awards in China. His recent U.S. honors include first prize at the National Juried Art Exhibition.
Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company celebrated the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Sunday. Shen Yun will perform three more shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Saturday Feb. 20 through Sunday Feb. 21.
