The effects of weather can take a toll on a deck, so keeping it clean is a good way to preserve its quality and endurance. A basic cleaning every year is a good maintenance routine, because the dirt and mildew that accumulates can be surprising and damaging. It’s an important job, whether you hire a deck cleaning service or buy a power pressure washer and do it yourself.
To power wash a 15-foot-by-20-foot (approximately 300 square feet), one-level deck, a cleaning contractor will charge $232, which includes labor and material. You can buy an electric pressure washer with a pressure range of 1500-2000 PSI (pounds per square inch) for about $130, do the job, and pocket a 44% saving. Another option is to rent an electric pressure washer for the day for about $50 and do the job.
No matter who does the work, first take the time to inspect the deck. Look for loose fasteners and split or damaged boards and repair them. For added protection when the deck is clean and dry, apply a water sealer, which runs about $60 for two gallons. It’s easy to apply with a paint/stain pad on an extension pole.
The payback on the investment in the washer isn’t immediate, but if you’re looking for a good excuse to buy one, this is it. We use ours to clean the deck, the siding, the shed and picnic table and even our boat, and it has been out on loan for countless other uses.
