WASHINGTON—Divine Performing Arts (DPA) performed before an almost full house on its third run at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts before an enthusiastic audience.
The audience was delighted to see perhaps for the first time traditional Chinese culture in the form of stories drawn from China’s 5,000-year history to present-day China and honored the performers with curtain calls and a standing ovation.
Dr. Tom Mastroianni, a nearly 40-year Washingtonian, is a well-known piano player and teacher who has performed at the Kennedy Center, lectured, given concerto appearances, and performed chamber music throughout the world.
Dr. Mastroianni has been in China and said, “I have traveled to China and have heard the music on traditional instruments and have always been very impressed by the incredible level of performance that you can achieve on those instruments.
“It was fascinating, the pace was just constant. I mean it didn’t let up for a second, it kept you moving forward. And the colors, the costumes, and the dancing—it was beautiful.
“I was particularly impressed by the Erhu player. Her tone, her inflection, and her style were just like Chinese opera singing. It had the character of authenticity … it seemed like the real stuff.
“I have many students who have been very interested in the culture or their own cultures. And it is not only Chinese students, but Korean and others as well. I think that is a good thing because it is a stimulus and to see how it works in today’s world.”
“This show is good. … What a fantastic group!”
