Each year, it is estimated that about 23 million miscarriages happen on a global scale. Singer-songwriter Phil King recently grieved alongside friends who went through their own devastating experiences with miscarriages. When he realized how few songs exist that offer hope and comfort for such a life-changing event, he decided to pen one of his own. The gentle, emotive tune acted as a balm for his friends who had gone through the loss of their unborn children.
Now, “Miscarriages” is helping others who’ve experienced the same kind of loss find peace.

As King and his wife Kalyn started their own family, welcoming a twin girl and boy into the world, fellow couples they are close with also looked forward to adding more leaves to their respective family trees. King gained a whole new perspective regarding how precious life is when confronted with the news that one of their friends experienced a miscarriage.

After grieving with them, King became even more emotionally affected when another couple he and his wife know experienced the loss of one of their unborn twins. It was the second child of the set of twins, known in healthcare as “Baby B.” As a father to a twin daughter and son, King realized that if he and his wife experienced that type of loss, their young son would have been their unborn “Baby B.”

While grappling with this stark reality, he turned to music for comfort. But he quickly realized just how little music is out there that not only addresses the poignant reality of a miscarriage but offers healing to those affected by it. After coming up short, he decided to write his own.

“In Heaven, families are reunited every day,” he said in an official statement. “My hope is that ‘Miscarriages’ reassures parents with the truth that their baby is not actually lost. Rather, their child is safe in Heaven … waiting for them on the other side of eternity. I hope this knowledge will prevail in the hearts and minds of people who have struggled with the grief of miscarriage as they listen.”

The Beauty of Heaven

The single opens with the lyrics, “They did not awake in this world/ They awoke in the arms of God.” Referencing the awe-inspiring powers of “Heaven’s majesty,” the verse concludes, “So alive in blessed freedom/ How could a child be lost if they’re home?”

King, who is also a worship leader and currently pastors at Trinity Fellowship Church in Amarillo, Texas, delivers a vocal performance filled with reassurance and solace as he paints a picture of Heaven’s beauty. Lyrics are filled with vivid images of dancing and joyous angels, prudent saints, and an all-encompassing spiritual love that offers protection to the children he addresses in the song.

The ballad also reminds parents that grief can be transformed into joy and tears can be transformed into hope. One day, the family will ultimately all be reunited and made whole.

A Worthy Single

King said that the songwriting process for “Miscarriages” was a cathartic one first and foremost. But ultimately, he realized if the song could aid families outside of his friend group also experiencing loss, it was worth it to release it as a single.

“After I wrote the song, I sent it to both couples with the intent of bringing comfort to them,” he shared. “Along with their reactions, and after playing it for a few others, I decided that with all the other millions of stories of miscarriages out there and so few songs on the subject, this one needed to be available for anyone to hear.”

Included in the single is the work of award-winning Christian music artist Tyler Micheal Smith, who provides a soaring, complementary strings arrangement.

“Miscarriages” is the second single King has released in 2025. In January, he debuted “Heal Our Land,” a song described as a “prayer for America,” and one that calls for peace and spiritual awakening. His signature track, the anthemic “So Worthy,” has garnered worldwide recognition from audiences. He has also enjoyed partnering with other artists over the years for their own compositions. He’s worked with Lauren Daigle and Danny Gokey for recording projects and live shows. His original, “Psalm 23 (I Am Not Alone),” features a collaboration with fellow worship leader Meredith Andrews, who is a recipient of the Gospel Music Association’s Dove Award.

King enjoys bringing people together through music. With his heartfelt “Miscarriages,” he adds another connecting thread to his repertoire, highlighting a musical catalog filled with songs that help listeners feel a sense of community. His latest single helps listeners navigate one of life’s toughest moments. His catalog as a whole helps them celebrate the beauty of life’s spiritual journey.
