Ovelia was one of the restaurants chosen to serve some of the top culinary talent in the world, the finalists of the Specialty Food Association’s sofi Awards, at New York City’s Javits Center earlier this month. The Epoch Times visited Ovelia and asked the restaurant to recreate what its chef served.
Ovelia chef-owner Peter Giannakas brought his background as an experimental microbiologist into the arena of food with a modern, scrumptious take on Greek cuisine at Ovelia Psistaria Bar in Astoria, Queens—while his parents Loannis and Evangelia execute more traditional fare.
At the sofis, Peter brought with him three distinct delights: Greek Coffee Steak—skirt steak in a Greek coffee-based rub (perhaps the most avant garde of the three), Fried Feta Cubes—sesame crusted feta with a drizzle of Greek honey, and Chickpea Salad—chickpeas with parsley, red onion, fresh lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil, for a light, simple meal.
