Winning art entries from a competition hosted by the New York Transit Museum and The Architectural League of New York in commemoration of Grand Central Terminal’s Centennial, will be on display at the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn. From 109 submissions, in media that varied from charcoal drawings, pencil sketches, and watercolors, to computer-generated landscapes, 20 winning entries were selected based on their overall richness and their creative visions of the iconic New York City landmark.

Human Rights Watch Film Festival

The Human Rights Watch Film Festival returns to New York with a program of 20 challenging and provocative films from across the globe that call for justice and social change. Now in its 24th edition, the festival will once again be presented at the Film Society of Lincoln Center and this year adds downtown screenings at the IFC Center. Eighteen documentaries and two fiction films will be featured, including 15 New York premieres. Most of the screenings will be followed by Q&A sessions with filmmakers, and some by panel discussions with experts and film subjects.

New Prints/New Narratives: Summer 2013, consists of some fifty projects by artists at all stages of their careers. The opening will be on June 13, from 6 to 8 p.m., with Members’ and Artists’ Talks from 5 to 6 p.m.. The exhibition consists of etchings, lithographs, monotypes, screenprints, books and video, and other manifestations of the printmaking process.

This exhibition highlights the nearly fifty-year career of ceramicist Edward Lycett (American, 1833–1910), former creative director of the Faience Manufacturing Company, based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It earned acclaim for producing ornamental wares that introduced a new standard of excellence in American ceramics. These bold and eclectic pieces synthesized Japanese, Chinese, and Islamic influences characteristic of the Aesthetic movement and were sold in the United States’ foremost art ware emporiums, including Tiffany & Company. On view are 39 Faience pieces.

This is a solo exhibition of over 20 life sized photographs by Maekawa, one of Japan’s rising stars in the field of wildlife photography, and the recently announced grand prize winner of the first Nikkei National Geographic Photo Prize. This marks Maekawa’s first exhibition in the United States. Looking at Maekawa’s sublime photographs of animals is an immersive experience. They give the viewer the feeling of entering into the landscape and confronting these magnificent animals in their pristine natural habits. Maekawa’s thrilling images transform nature photography into art.
