Morrell Wine Bar & Cafe, in the heart of Rockefeller Plaza, reopened its doors Monday after undergoing a complete renovation. The new design features a striped porcelain wood-plank floor, mohair velvet banquettes with resin-slab tabletops, and large white globe light fixtures.
Executive chef Juan Carlos Mendoza created a new American menu to pair with the extensive selection of wines, including a smoked duck salad, with citrus vinaigrette and wild arugula, and for lunch only, a foie gras terrine BLT, served with toasted brioche, amaretto onion jam, applewood-smoked bacon, lettuce, and roasted tomatoes.
The wine list, overseen by sommelier Anna-Christina Cabrales, features over 150 wines by the glass and over 1,000 bottles, as well as rare wines by the ounce from Morrell’s vintage collection. The adjacent Morrell & Company wine store reopens to showcase a sleek, modern design, and an Old and Rare Wine Vault, now triple its original size.
The rare wine vault shows off a rotation of some of the world’s greatest bottles. The collection includes a dozen vintages of Mouton Rothschild; 11 vintages of Lafite Rothschild; an Imperial of Chateau Petrus 1989 ($65,000), one of only three known in the world.
