When a young boy in Washington returned home from school one day to see his mother having chest pains and trouble breathing, he knew she needed help and insisted they go to the hospital. Fortunately, a trip to the doctor saved her life.
“I told her she needed to go to the hospital, but she kept saying she just wanted to stay here. I kept saying that we needed to go. So, I just went and got my shoes and coat on and told her we needed to go,” Camdyn said.
Kimberly, a single mother of three, thought she would be fine after putting her baby down and taking a nap.
After Kimberly visited her doctor, an ambulance was called immediately to send her to the hospital, where doctors found that she was suffering from pulmonary embolisms in both her lungs, which meant that her lungs were full of blood clots.
“If I had taken the nap, there’s a good chance it would’ve been a very different outcome. A sad one,” Kimberly said.
Camdyn had learned about pulmonary embolism from his teacher, Timathi Fitzpatrick, who had suffered an embolism herself and taught her students the signs and severity.
“It’s sometimes questionable whether they are paying attention but something stuck with him pretty well!” Fitzpatrick said.
As for Kimberly, she is grateful to her son for saving her life. “He is definitely my hero. They say your life flashes before your eyes, and it’s true. It makes you look at your kids in a whole different way,” she said.
