MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Mezzo soprano Modearer Henry wore a custom-made aqua satin dress embroidered with butterflies to see the Shen Yun New York Company perform at the Orpheum Theatre on Saturday night, Feb. 26.
Ms. Henry took the chance to see a show she knew nothing about, because a client “sent me an email of the actual dancing and everything. He said ‘you have to go see it.’ This is my first time seeing it. I will definitely be back,” she said.
Ms. Henry sings with her church choir and has a career with Federal Express, headquartered in Memphis.
Naturally the Bel Canto vocals in Shen Yun interested her. “I love all the singing. Most of the time when you hear singing it is a soprano, but I have to say that contralto—that was magnificent,” she said.
Jiansheng Yang, a tall, striking lady with a rich contralto voice, sang “The Choice.” The song is short and powerful. A man sitting in the orchestra section cried out “wow!” while she held a long note. Ms. Henry found her performance magnificent.
“I’m a mezzo-soprano. I can overlap between second soprano and alto,” said Ms. Henry, adding that she was observing the stage presence of all the singers, because she is preparing for a vocal contest, and hopes to apply some of what she learned in her own performance.
Ms. Henry said a couple sitting next to her first saw Shen Yun some years ago and now make sure they see each year’s new show. She plans to do the same, “Oh yes, definitely,” and to bring others with her.
New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. For more information, visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
