SEATTLE—Residents of Seattle enjoyed the Shen Yun Performing Arts 2009 Spring Tour show at the historical Paramount Theatre on May 22. Dr. Manuelito-Kerkviliet, the president of a large Seattle university, was in the audience.
“Fascinating, fascinating! And the reason why I say that is because I’m Native American, and I could really see some similarities with our backgrounds or with the way we look at how we came, how creation or how our divinities, or our deities are worshipped, and so there is a lot of contrast but also similarities for me,” said Dr. Manuelito-Kerkviliet, who became the first Native American female president of an accredited university outside the tribal college system.
She was particularly intrigued by the ancient legends and tales depicted in the dances.
“It’s not just the language or the culture but the stories and where the ancient stories came from. … That’s so critical to the next generation and the generations that follow ...”
Shen Yun, a New York-based performing arts company founded by leading Chinese artists, is bringing about a renaissance of China’s traditional culture and presenting it to audiences around the world through Chinese classical dance and music.
Dr. Manuelito-Kerkviliet said that she wants to bring some students to show next year.
