Packard Motors, the historic luxury automaker, is sponsoring the Miss New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Global Chinese Beauty Pageant, highlighting shared values between the company and the pageant.
“Packard comes across as that American gentleman, that American lady with respect, with focus on good, truthful, and righteous values,” Packard Motor Company owner Scott Andrews told NTD TV, the sister media of The Epoch Times. “When I see the pageant is focusing on that during the gathering of contestants and to teach them these kinds of values, well, again, Packard’s known as the luxurious gentleman, or lady who espoused those values, and this is what this pageant is all about.”
The Miss NTD Pageant has narrowed the field of contestants now to 40 young women who are currently participating in courses on traditional Chinese culture. The pageant’s live rounds will be held in New York from Sept. 24–30.
Once called the “American Rolls Royce,” the stylish Packard has been owned by Winston Churchill, Howard Hughes, and Babe Ruth. Packard closed its doors in 1956, but was revived in 2019 by Mr. Andrews.
“The more I learned about Packard and its amazing American history, I said, boy, we need to make sure this stays in the United States of America,” Mr. Andrews told NTD. “I learned about the amazing people who ran Packard, how much they cared for their employees and their fellow business people, more importantly, how much they had no problem setting everything aside to stand for American values: truth, tradition, and those kinds of things. In other words, at the end of the day, they wanted a good civil society, they wanted to bring that, and they espoused it through their company, which became what Packard was known for.”
He believes today’s Packard, building on tradition, will be a beacon of hope for the world.
“We see in so many different industries today, whether it’s big tech, whether it’s automotive—so many industries now are marred by companies leading down a wrong trail,” Mr. Andrews said. “I believe Packard is going to be one of those companies that was the guiding light, a shining light to bring people back to good civil discourse at times, but good traditional values and enjoying wonderful new innovations again. It’s time to do that.”
The Packard company invented the steering wheel, bumpers, glovebox, and the V-12 engine that inspired Enzo Ferrari, according to Mr. Andrews. It was a company of innovation back then, and he says the auto industry needs more of that innovation now.
“Packard was the apple of the industry that defined the car in so many different ways. And it happened right here in the United States, in our home state of Warren, Ohio,” Mr. Andrews said. “We have a sleeping giant just waiting to be awakened. And once it’s awakened, look out.”
Inner Value
In addition to cars, Packard manufactures fine watches of distinction. Like its cars, the watches are crafted with precision on the inside and beautiful on the outside. Mr. Andrews understands the importance of inner beauty. That is another reason he wanted Packard to support the Miss NTD Pageant.
“So many pageants focus on the outside, with all the different types of things in the contests. This is starting from the inside and working its way out,” Mr. Andrews said. “I think it’s time for young ladies to become champions of inner beauty again and to bring that out, because once you take care of your inside, the outside naturally occurs.”
The Miss NTD Pageant is focused on recapturing traditional Chinese values and restoring them in the world, and that is something Mr. Andrews appreciates.
It’s time to show the younger generation true culture, he says, and to show them what they are missing out on.
“They focus on the richness of Instagram or the richness of what’s happening in average social media posts today. They’re missing out on so much rich culture. Once they start to discover that, they discover a whole new world that is much more fulfilling and gives them so much more inner value.”
Similar to Packard, he hopes the Miss NTD Pageant shows the world again, how to embrace tradition and renew culture. His advice to contestants is to first follow God and second, focus on your inner beauty.
“I can’t wait to see how this pageant is going to turn out in terms of its global presence, as well as what’s going to happen at the pageant itself,” Mr. Andrews said. “I foresee a lot of excitement in the air and a lot of joy. I think that’s one of the big words there is there’s gonna be a lot joy because it’s a joyous occasion to celebrate these kinds of cultural values.”
