SACRAMENTO, Calif.—It was the desire to learn about other cultures that drove Genevieve Trujillo to attend the Shen Yun Performing Arts show at the Sacramento Community Center Theater on April 6. Ms. Trujillo works as an Account Executive for local Sacramento television station NEWS10, an ABC affiliate.
“I like to explore different cultures, and California is so diverse—it really is diverse, so exploring other cultures besides your own is always a neat experience,” said Ms. Trujillo.
“I think it’s beautiful, and really, it’s entertaining,” she said about the first half of the performance.
“It’s interesting to see all the dancers, and how athletic they are,” added Ms. Trujillo.
Ms. Trujillo, who was nicely dressed for the show, was particularly attracted to the beautiful costumes of Shen Yun.
“It’s interesting, and I really like the costumes, I think that’s the best part,” she said.
The costumes for every Shen Yun performance piece are handmade for each performer. Each layer of silk is hand dyed.
“Well, it’s beautiful,” Ms. Trujillo said about the costumes, and “with all of the colors … and how the motions it brings to the dancing and everything.”
Ms. Trujillo talked about which parts of the show she enjoyed best: “I really like the ones where they tell a story. Like the ‘[Little Mischievous] Monks,’ and then the one about the teacher (Our Story).”
The Little Mischievous Monks is a joyful piece that transports the audience back to the days of solitary Buddhist mediation practice in a remote mountain temple. When the master monk steps out, the little monks break the silence and join together in dance.
{etRelated54262, 54258} Our Story begins inside a classroom where the teacher writes three Chinese characters, “Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance.” The Shen Yun program guide explains: “The three words, though essential values in classical China, are grounds for arrest under communist rule today: the three are central to the banned spiritual discipline known as Falun Dafa.”
What ensues is a story of courage where the state police burst into the classroom and abduct the teacher. The students rise up and attempt to protect their teacher, but fail. In the end, the students are rewarded for their courage and conviction.
Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company will perform two more shows at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, April 9-10. For more information please visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
